Linlithgow is in the central belt of Scotland, on the main train line between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and not far from the M9, the M8, and Edinburgh Airport.
Go flies to Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow Airport from London Stansted (unofficial site [appears down at time of writing]); EasyJet flies from London Luton. Flights are usually cheaper than taking the train and much more comfortable (flight time is just under an hour). Cheap flights require a Saturday night stay (around £55 return, but it is essential to book early). If you're planning to spend some time in Scotland, we'd be very happy to give some suggestions of places you might like to visit.
Linlithgow is fifteen minutes from Edinburgh Airport by car, but there is unfortunately no direct public transport. A taxi ride costs about £22; alternatively Airlink buses run into Edinburgh every 10-15 minutes, and from there you can catch a train.
Scottish Citylink buses (number 905) travel between Glasgow Airport and Glasgow Queen Street station every fifteen minutes, from which there are frequent trains to Linlithgow.
Linlithgow is on the main train line between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street [NB: not Glasgow Central]: 16 minutes from Edinburgh and 30 minutes from Glasgow. The church is roughly ten minutes' walk along the High Street from the station. All trains from Edinburgh stop at Haymarket, three minutes down the line.
Approximate times (please confirm closer to the date, or check Railtrack Timetables): Edinburgh 1403 - Linlithgow 1424; Edinburgh 1415 - Linlithgow 1431. Glasgow 1345 - Linlithgow 1410; Glasgow 1415 - Linlithgow 1440. (add ten minutes' brisk walk to the church).
