We went to the Rosie Maternity Hospital on Monday 16 December 2002
(11 weeks + 1, we thought), and got these. The sonographer said the
baby was 12 weeks + 1 day, curiously (expected due date 29-06-2003,
rather than 06-07-2003). Who to believe? The baby will come when it
wants, no doubt :-).
It's sometimes a bit tricky figuring out which grey blob is what, so there's a guide to the second scan below here.
Baby doing a somersault
The baby was busy turning somersaults during the scan, and seemed quite happy! Notice that the scan is a single slice, so the knees don't show up here - just the thighs and the feet (you can see one foot quite clearly in this image). Keith even managed to see individual fingers on a hand twice - the resolution seemed sharper when watching it live than on the printout. The "crown-to-rump" length was 51mm or 56mm depending on which way round the baby was.
Baby relaxing with its feet up
To see which part is what, click here. If you look closely, you can see its eye socket and nose - a definite face. Watching it live, we could see a tiny regular flutter in the chest, which was the heartbeat (about 130 beats per minute, we think its supposed to be). You can't see it in this image, but we could clearly see the umbilical cord too. We're quite amused at its relaxed pose with its arms behind its head!
