Aidan’s Gallery: seventeen months old

Aidan is now 17 months old! He's been having lots of fun this month, visiting friends and family, and going to some exciting places. It was Mummy's birthday earlier this month, and Aidan handpainted a lovely mug especially for her. He had a wonderful time at her birthday party too, playing peekaboo in the back garden with some friends, who taught him to say "boo"! His English vocabulary is improving daily - notable words recently are "please" and "on". The word "on" is usually accompanied by the action of switching a light on and off, and on and off, and on and off, and on... Daddy made Aidan a very special present because of this - a "light box", complete with seven switches and five torch-sized light bulbs. This has Aidan fascinated, and he will play with it for long periods of time!

Aidan has put his Tumbletots training to good use this month. He can climb down from his highchair safely now, and loves to climb up and down on the furniture, including crawling along the top of the chest of drawers beside our bed. He certainly keeps us on our toes!

Aidan had a great time dressing up as Jo Jingles for Children in Need, and in fact he won his class competition for the best "Jo"! We have also been to visit Aidan's friends, Catherine and Emily for lunch. The three of them had a great time showing off and teaching each other new naughty tricks! Aidan had a wonderful time going to a big soft-play area, called Fizzy Kids, with another friend, Taya.

One of the big excitments of this month was on Mummy and Daddy's wedding anniversary - Aidan had his first night away from both Mummy and Daddy, as he stayed with Grandma and Grandpa while they went away for the night - we think that Mummy and Daddy missed Aidan more than he missed them!! On our return, Aidan stopped having bottles for his milk, and now takes his milk from a cup with a spout. It took him a few days to get used to it, but he's happy now. He did find the drinking from the bottle very comforting, and has had to find a replacement for that. He appears to have chosen Clarence II, a cuddly toy given to him by his Uncle Jonathan when he was born.

Aidan went to Bishop's Stortford for the first time this month to visit Allie and Ken. We went out for lunch and also found a great park, which Aidan loved. He enjoyed going Christmas tree shopping, especially as Mummy and Daddy bought him an extra-special Aidan-sized tree!

Aidan has been looking very cute this month, so much so that we really struggled to decide which photos to put up on this page. So we decided to create an extra page, which you can find here, containing the others. Enjoy!

Aidan and Taya playing at Fizzy Kids. It wasn't all climbing and sliding; there were more intellectual pursuits as well. Aidan does like these bead games, and they (luckily!) have them everywhere - doctors' surgeries, Moto motorway services (our favourite), etc etc.
A look of intense concentration on his face, Aidan manipulates his light box. This is one of the best toys ever, custom-built by Daddy, and it can be switched "on, off, on, off, on, off" all day long. Five torch bulbs and a selection of seven switches (six different ones) from Maplin provide ample opportunity for switching without disturbing Mummy or Daddy. [STOP PRESS: Now you can play with it too!] A look of intense concentration on his face.

"On, off, on, off." As an example of the more invasive aspects of Aidan's light fixation, here he is switching on and off Daddy's bedside lamp. Accompanied by the appropriate words. "On, off, on, off."

"It's up there!" is one of Aidan's favourite phrases, and this photograph illustrates it perfectly. Only ever used with reference to a light, and long before he was able to say the word "light" itself. "It's up there!"
